She may have invented herself, written plays and hollywood scripts around her persona, but if the market hadn't already been there (thanks to countless femme fatales in Vaudeville and elsewhere) she'd have been a pauper. Especially if she had waited until after the imposition of the 1934 Production Code. The stars were just aligned, just right. ps. if you make your living as a sex goddess, don't ever grow old, and if you do, stay home. There is still no market for that. And it's been close to a century or more that this has been the case.
